Cuando la mirada se detiene en la página escrita de un libro y comienza el proceso de descodificación del texto, el sujeto de la acción renuncia a su realidad circundante y penetra en un universo ajeno. A partir de este momento se inicia una experiencia única que consiste en el vuelo de la mente -. Así comienza esta obra donde nos relata el mundo de la lectura en la Castilla del siglo XV, quiénes leían y que leían, mostrando el difícil problema qué tenían las mujeres para poder acceder a los libros, dado el rechazo general de la época a la alfabetización de la mujeres. También nos muestra, el canon de lecturas femeninas de la época, para aquellas escasísimas afortunadas que sabían leer. [en] These pages reproduce the text of a lecture on reading in the Crown of Castile in the fifteenth century delivered by Elisa Ruiz Garcia to mark the Day of the Book. Based on a few texts gleaned from Castilian documents dating from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, it reconstructs the Castilian nobility of the time's canon of reading matter. The list of recommended reading differed according to the sex of the intended readership. Religious works were proposed for both men and women, but biblical texts were suggested for men, as were writings devoted to enhancing the qualities of the noble ethos, while women were advised above all to read Books of Hours. The canon barely included humanistic literature and embraced the classics only insofar as they represented a moral philosophy.
