Cuando desde los Grupos de Trabajo sobre Historia de la Ingeniería Mecánica y de las Máquinas y Mecanismos (HiM3) de la Asociación Española de Ingeniería Mecánica (AEIM) y de la Federación Iberoamericana de Ingeniería Mecánica (FEIBIM), nos planteamos llevar a cabo una serie de publicaciones sobre figuras ilustres de la ingeniería mecánica, teníamos como principal objetivo dar a conocer el trabajo de tantos ingenieros que, en muchos casos sin reconocimiento público, hicieron de nuestra profesión el centro de su vida, tanto en el ámbito profesional como en el docente e investigador. Esta iniciativa surgió no sin cierto escepticismo por el éxito que pudiera tener, que se vio rápidamente superado por el apoyo y por la predisposición de tantos compañeros a contribuir con su trabajo y sus investigaciones en aras de reconocer a tantos profesionales que nos han precedido, que con sus valiosas aportaciones, han conseguido que la disciplina de la ingeniería mecánica haya alcanzado los niveles actuales de desarrollo. Para conseguir de este objetivo ha sido fundamental el apoyo de la Universidad de Jaén a través de su Departamento de Ingeniería Mecánica y Minera, que sigue acogiendo la Secretaría de estos Grupos de Trabajo, y de su Editorial UJA, para hacer realidad esta serie/colección de publicaciones. El primer fruto de esta iniciativa fue el volumen uno de Figuras ilustres de la Ingeniería Mecánica en España, publicado en junio de 2018, en el que se recogían nueve semblanzas de ingenieros insignes y que tan buena acogida tuvo, no solo entre nuestro colectivo sino también en el ámbito de la ingeniería en general, y entre los interesados por el desarrollo de la ingeniería y tecnología. Este segundo volumen pretende dar continuidad a esta iniciativa, ampliando el ámbito a nuestros países hermanos iberoamericanos, en los que la aportación de las figuras ilustres aquí recogidas fue tan importante para su progreso y en muchos casos coincidente con la ingeniería desarrollada en España.
When within the Working Groups on History of Mechanical Engineering and Machines and Mechanisms (HiM3) of the Spanish Association of Mechanical Engineering (AEIM) and the Ibero-American Federation of Mechanical Engineering (FEIBIM), we thought about carrying out a series of publications on illustrious figures of mechanical engineering, our main objective was to publicize the work of so many engineers who, in many cases without public recognition, made of our profession the center of their lives, both professionally and in teaching and researching. This initiative arose not without some skepticism due to the success it could have, although this fact was quickly overcome by the support and predisposition of so many colleagues who were willing to contribute with their work and research, in order to recognize so many professionals who have preceded us and who, with their valuable contributions, have made possible that the discipline of mechanical engineering has reached the current levels of development. To achieve this objective, the support of the University of Jaén, through its Department of Mechanical and Mining Engineering, which continues to host the Secretariat of these Working Groups, and of its Editorial UJA has been fundamental in order to make this series/collection of publications. The first outcome of this initiative was volume one of Illustrious Figures of Mechanical Engineering in Spain, published in June 2018, in which nine portraits of distinguished engineers were collected, a , book very well received, not only among our group but also in the field of engineering in general and among those interested in the development of engineering and technology. This second volume aims to give continuity to this initiative, expanding the scope to our Ibero-American brother countries, whereby the contribution of the illustrious figures listed here was so important for their development and, in many cases, coinciding with the engineering developed in Spain.
